Accumulated Homelessness: Analysing Protracted Displacement along Eritreans’ Life Histories

Abstract This article introduces the notion of ‘accumulated homelessness’ to account for repeated loss and lack home experienced by many migrants in Europe today. Through lens homelessness, we argue that debate on protracted displacement—often applied only developing countries—should be extended Europe. Going beyond idea shelterlessness, consider homelessness as a multidimensional multiscalar condition which encompasses material emotional aspects. By analysing two life histories Eritrean men living Italy Netherlands, examine set structural, social, individual conditions leading them lose different places times well their attempts—such finding accommodation, establishing community organisation, or moving onwards—to reconstruct home.
